Slashed funding has long term costs

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey has described cuts to the NCA as thoughtless, and damaging in the long term.

“The Commonwealth’s cut to the NCA’s proposed development of Constitution Ave is short sighted” Dr Foskey said today.

“The development of Constitution Ave could be a key part of making Canberra a sustainable city, but only if was to support a rapid transit system, such as light rail.”

“The national capital was developed as a car based city. The twin impacts of greenhouse gas targets and peak oil mean we now need to change the way we operate”.

“Allowing intense development in and around Canberra without putting the infrastructure in place for a modern rapid transit system is a step in the wrong direction.”

“The federal Labor Party was keen to make all the right noises in its campaign to win office last year, but its first real test in Canberra suggests it is not prepared to take a long term view.”

“This decision also throws into doubt the Australian government’s commitment to the centenary of Canberra” Dr Foskey said.
