Green waste too hard for Hargreaves

Minister for Territory and Municipal Services John Hargreaves was unable to provide a sensible answer today when ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey asked why it was so hard for the ACT to run green waste collection systems.

“I know Canberra people don’t understand why there is green waste recycling in Sydney and in Queanbeyan and in Eurobodalla but not in Canberra” Dr Foskey said today.

“Sadly, when I put that question to the Minister he showed he had no idea as well.”

“Indeed, his answer became a rambling incoherent piece about drinking wine on Thursday at Narooma.”

“It is a waste of time for all of us in the Assembly when the Minister doesn’t know what is happening in his portfolio and when asked a simple concrete question goes on a foolish ramble instead."

“The ACT Government has both local and state government responsibilities. Rubbish collection is a part of the core business, and we have an increasingly ‘aspirational’ target of no waste by 2010.”

“Canberra people want to do the right thing and dispose of their waste sensibly. We make efforts to reuse and recycle. The increased shift to medium density housing makes green waste disposal a real issue for many of us.”

“It is offensive then to those people looking for better government services to hear the Minister responsible demonstrate his lack of capacity, interest and goodwill in the matter” Dr Foskey said.
