Political Partnerships ahead of Civil Unions
MLA Deb Foskey has reconfirmed the ACT Greens commitment to civil unions which the ACT Government has abandoned today.
Speaking at a rally in support of civil unions rally in February, Dr Foskey said "I know how important the ceremonial aspect of the proposed civil partnerships scheme is for many same-sex couples in Canberra. So I am very pleased that Chief Minister Stanhope and the Attorney General are standing by it.â??
The Greens pointed to the ACT Labor Governmentâ??s strong condemnation of the Howard Government for its high handed disallowance of the ACTâ??s Civil Unions Act, and its relatively meek surrender now its Rudd Labor mates are making the same moralistic judgement.
â??I understand that the ACT Attorney General believes he is in a no-win situationâ?? a spokesperson for Dr Foskey said today.
â??But the ACT Government is letting its federal colleagues off the hook by abandoning its supposedly strong commitment to civil unions, before even putting them to the test.â??
â??It seems they are putting political partnerships ahead of civil unionsâ?? he said.
