Feed-in made fairer

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey will move to amend the renewable energy feed in law being debated in the Assembly today.

“My key amendment would ensure that any increase in the electricity price that is due to renewable energy feed-in doesn’t apply to consumers who are eligible for energy concessions, to refugees or Abstudy recipients.”

“My amendment ensures that the most disadvantaged people in our community don’t end up subsidising those who can afford to put solar cells on their roof.”

“We know the ACT Chief Minister was concerned about equity issues. I believe this amendment addresses this concern.”

“My amendments would also ensure that ActewAGL can’t sell this electricity back to Green Power customers.”

“Green Power was designed as a voluntary scheme to produce over and above the renewable energy produced through government schemes.”

“Selling electricity created through the feed-in market as Green Power would result in double charging the people who chose to buy Green Power in the first place.”

“Other amendments include a prohibition on nuclear energy, improved reporting requirements, and a broader list of renewable energy sources.”

“While the feed-in laws are a good step in supporting the solar energy industry it is really small bickies when it comes to greenhouse gases.”

“If we are going to reduce our footprint substantially, we need large scale initiatives, such as the roll out of a scheme to make all our buildings more energy efficient, as well” Dr Foskey said.
